Dr. Bronner’s uses palm oil for our bar soaps, where it provides hardness and longevity.
Though palm oil is ideal for soapmaking, it is often grown in an unsustainable manner, directly contributing to the clear-cutting of rainforests from Brazil to Borneo. This clear-cutting is used to create arable land for large, monocrop palm tree plantations run by multi-national corporations that exploit farmers and laborers, trample native land rights, and do nothing to improve workers’ communities or standard of living.
In light of this reality, we dedicated ourselves to building and fostering a fair trade, sustainable source of palm oil: Dr. Bronner’s needed to do palm right!
We established our sister company, Serendipalm, in Ghana to produce palm oil without any new deforestation or destruction of native wildlife habitat. Skeptics maintained that sustainable and fair trade palm oil couldn’t be done. But Serendipalm has been proving them wrong since it began operation in 2007.
- We work directly with farmers and producers in Asuom, Ghana, where no rainforests are destroyed for palm plantations.
- Our Ghanaian partners work directly with farmers to improve soil quality and yields through organic farming practices while protecting endemic species’ habitats.
- Our palm oil mill ensures safe working conditions and pays fair wages.
- The Fair Trade premium paid by Dr. Bronner’s and other buyers of Serendipalm’s palm oil has funded numerous community development projects, including deep water wells, toilet facilities, a market hall, a maternity ward and living quarters for nurses at local hospitals, addressing needs identified by the local community.
Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner, a third-generation master soapmaker from a German-Jewish soapmaking family. He used the labels on his superb ecological soaps to spread his message that we must realize our transcendent unity across religious & ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!” We honor the vision of Dr. Bronner by making socially and environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, while dedicating our profits to help make a better world. Using sustainable and socially responsible raw materials, such as our palm oil, is an integral part of that mission.
